Designer Denim & Jean Fit Guide
The fashion experts at eModa.com understand that it’s not easy to find the right fit, color, cut, and brand when shopping for jeans online, so we’ve put together a comprehensive denim fit guide that analyzes our favorite brands for guys and gals that will have you in the perfect jeans in minutes!
First thing’s first, you have to know your measurements! It’s important to know where you stand when it comes to the right fit for your body. You will need three different measurements that will represent your size, inseam and rise.
Since most designer jeans rest on or slightly above the hips, start by measuring the area between your waste and hips with the measuring tape relaxed. The rule is that you add 2 inches to your actual measurement for an optimal fit, for instance a person with a 28-inch waist will wear a size 30. What does this translate into for women’s sizes, you ask? Generally you subtract 22 from the number of inches you’ve measured, for example, if you measured 32 inches you take a size 10.
Next you need to find out your inseam. If you aren’t sure how to do this the easiest way is to take your best fitting pair of pants and fold them in half down the center. Measure from the crotch of the pant down to the bottom of the leg. This is your inseam!
While you have those great fitting pants out, place the end of the measuring tape at the crotch again and measure up to the waist band. TADA! You’ve got the rise!
One important thing you might want to know when shopping on our site is the conversion numbers for your size. Since eModa.com is dedicated to bringing you only the finest denim selection from around the world, chances are you will run into a conversion issue. But don’t panic!! We’ve put together the best chart.

Designer Denim Recommendations for Women.
- If you suffer from ho-hum bum syndrome (flat butt, slender figure) your best
bet is to try a stylish tapered leg or skinny jean. Since these are generally
cut to be extremely form fitting, they will flaunt whatever you’ve got. Jeans
with flashy embellishment on the back pockets and a contoured yoke bring extra
attention to your backside. Sandblasting around the back pockets will help to
highlight it as well. Flap pockets like the ones we see on True Religion Jeans
also lead eyes to your behind. If you are looking for an ultra low rise denim
that will compliment your slim figure, check out Frankie B. For extra booty,
wear your jeans with a cropped hoodie such as this super cute one from Salvage
and top it off with a pair of heels for a little lift!
- Shake what your mama gave you! If you’ve got junk in the trunk (curvy) you’ll
want to accentuate every curve by choosing brands like Joes Jeans in the “Honey”
style or True Religion’s infamous “Bobby” style, that have at least 1% Spandex .
This will ensure that your curvature won’t get lost in the gaps! There’s nothing
worse than a baggin’ saggin’ butt! Dark wash denim will make you look slimmer
and taller. Steer clear sandblasting around the back pockets and embellishment
around the hips! Too many details will bring all the attention to your largest
area. Balance it all out by wearing a long fitted shirt with flashy graphics
and/or embellishment, or a mini dress like this one from Sprenzii.
- If you’re the kind of girl that’s petite and sweet (short torso and stature)
we would like to introduce you to the Provocateur Jean from Joes Jeans or any
skinny jean that has a linear straight leg or cigarette cut leg. You don’t want
to get anything that tapers around the leg like a pencil cut; it will make you
look frumpy. Knowing your inseam information will really help you to find the
best cut, so have it handy while shopping! If you are concerned with reducing
unwanted curves, wide-leg trouser style jeans will give you exactly what you are
looking for! Making friends with your tailor is a must when you’re petite, so
ask about an original hem, which will guarantee to be the most flattering for
your height. If all else fails, try the Highland jeans from J & Company with a
pair of pointed toe shoes and an elongating top, such as this white v-neck
hoodie from Grail.
- Girls that are on top of it all (long torso, model figure) surprisingly have
the hardest time finding the right style of jeans that will flatter their
bodies. Knowing your inseam is vital, so keep it close! You want to choose a
style that has at least a 36” inseam and a low rise to balance out your torso.
Brands like Taverniti, Rock and Republic, and Antik Denim have been producing
more jeans specifically designed for taller women. A big hit in our store for
the lofty lady is the Karen Jean from People’s Liberation. Try them out with
metallic ballet flats and a patterned form fitting thermal, like this one from J
& Company, for a flawless silhouette!
Designer Denim Recommendations for Men.
- We’ve heard over and over that guys with a brawny build (muscular features
with chest size 8” or more than waist) have the worst time finding designer
clothing! Our advice: Compliment your large shoulder span with a fitted denim to
create a bold and sexy statement! We recommend these Five Four Denim
for a fresh look. If you are slightly larger than the average athletic built
male, you definitely need to check out the denim selections from 575 Denim
which are especially popular with football players. They offer you trendy style,
with enough room to maneuver. Check out these pair of 575 denim and team it
up with a form fitting long sleeved shirt, like this one from Salvage!
- The taller the tree, the broader it’s branches; the taller the man, the more
questions about denim they have! If you’re tall (long legs and a longing for a
great pair of jeans), you’ve come to the right place! You want to keep in mind
that the fuller the cut of your clothes, the more balanced you will look. To
break up your vertical direction, we suggest these jeans from Robins. You’ll be
pleasantly surprised with the long inseam and might have trouble taking them
off! Another great brand to look at is Rock & Republic who usually begins their
inseam at a 34. Avoid pinstripes and go for busy graphic printed tees, such as
this great spattered paint shirt by Salvage!
- If you’ve got a little bit more to love and consider yourself to be a husky
hunk (slightly heavier than average build), the fashion experts at eModa.com
have just what you need to look your very best! Monarchy is a great brand
for slightly stout guys because of the slimming lines they create in through the
hip and thigh. Look for jeans with a higher rise to avoid bulginess around the
hip and lower waist. Monarchy jeans also provides a great selection for thick-waisted
men. If you absolutely need a pair of True Religion Jeans, we recommend you
explore dark wash denim or grey ones like these Billy Jeans to disguise unwanted
curves.
- Slender men (slightly smaller and shorter than the average build), we know you
aren’t into going to a tailor to get your jeans hemmed, so we’ve gone and done
the dirty work by measuring the inseam ourselves on all of our top selling
brands for men! True Religion takes it home with not only an optimal 32-33”
inseam, but for providing you with the most stylish denim available! Check out
this hot pair of True Religion Joey Jean’s or go for sheer style with this pair
of Juicy Couture Jeans with a 31.5” inseam! In demand brands like
Monarchy also keep you in mind with slimmer cut legs. To increase your
verticality and look more athletic, try a combination of these jeans from J.
